Patterson
Willis Patterson, MA, MFA,
Prof. Emeritus: A native and graduate of Wyoming,
Willis’ education reflects a bachelor’s degree in
Art education, a Master of Arts in Art and a Master
of Fine Arts in Art. His teaching experience started
at a national experimental school in Las Vegas,
Nevada under the direction of Stanford University.
He has taught sculpture and lithography at the
University of Wyoming prior to his position at
Central Wyoming College in Riverton, Wyoming. He has
attended a variety of workshops and conferences. His
work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe
and Japan.
Willis’ study and direction has
been influenced by interest and experience in a wide
range of media of both two and three dimensional
realms. His personal perception is that “any idea or
visual image may require different options to best
present that image. In addition, the actual physical
properties of various media may enhance the
direction of certain ideas or images to improve the
presentation.”
This viewpoint, combined with
symbolism, and the ironic parallels and contrasts of
life, aids his personal direction in art, and
photography. His imagination and humor provide him
with an inner sense of pleasure where wits, satire,
metaphor, the unusual—all become options. Willis
enjoys the creative stimulation that is found in
capturing the images and sharing the experiences
with others.
Willis Patterson has used
photography continually in teaching his classes of
32 years and in numerous instructional texts. He was
also an Art Photography instructor and authored a
thesis “Photographic Emulsions-their artistic
relationship to varied surfaces.” Willis is able to
provide suggestions on composition and artistic
solutions with those interested in photography. The
exciting possibilities of the camera to capture
fresh images are the most satisfying aspect of the
creative process.
As an avid photographer, he
photographs almost every day. While this creative
work takes many different directions, the natural
beauty and interest of the Wyoming landscape and
wildlife have become a major interest. Wyoming
provides a serene, yet exciting environment that
stimulates one’s desire to constantly photograph.
Willis’ constant access to Wyoming’s natural places
will offer a significant benefit to those attending
the Institute. |
